The Japanese alpine resort of Kiroro has won ‘Best Ski Hotel in Japan’ for its family-friendly property, Kiroro, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, at the recent 2020 World Ski Awards.
More than two million votes were cast for the awards, which has become a quasi ‘Oscars’ for ski tourism.
Kiroro is located in the heart of Yoichi, Hokkaido, and is currently gearing up for a fun snow season with new amenities, special promotions and, of course, enhanced Covid protocols.
Perfect for families wanting to enjoy the winter season, the area boasts the deepest snow (the local area regularly sees close to 20m of super-dry powder) and one of the longest ski seasons in the world. Along with this, there’s top-notch family-friendly accommodation and plenty of dining and shopping opportunities.
The all-year resort boasts groomed runs and hundreds of acres of tree skiing plus heaps of snow-based activities to keep youngsters busy. There are ski and snowboard runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced - the night-skiing is particularly magical. As darkness falls, the runs light up and snowflakes whirl.
Younger skiers can take advantage of Annie Ski Kids Academy which offers half- and full-day courses for children aged three to 15 years, freeing parents to tackle the slopes alone or head back to the hotel to relax.

And if the children fancy some time away from the slopes, the resort boasts a fun snow park and an activity menu bursting with alpine activities. Enjoy snow mobile, snow banana boat, snow-shoeing, cat ski tours and more. And on December 24, Kiroro Snow Village will be lighting up the apres-ski scene with Hokkaido-inspired dining, winter cocktails, snow candle-making, a life-size igloo and festive light displays.
Accommodation at Kioro at its five-star Mountain Village includes two international resort hotels - Sheraton Hokkaido Kiroro Resort and The Kiroro, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel - as well as ski-to-door residences at the recently opened Yu Kiroro.
Both hotels offer cosy hotel rooms and multiple dining spaces, as well as an indoor swimming pool and games areas for young children and teens at The Kiroro, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel.
Meanwhile, Yu Kiroro houses a collection of exclusive ski-in/ski-out residences at the base of the mountain. Services here include ski valet, natural indoor-outdoor onsen, bilingual concierge services, fitness centre and all-day dining.
The entire resort is connected by the Gateway Express gondola-chairlift that runs from the front of The Tribute Portfolio Hotel and Yu Kiroro to Sheraton Hokkaido Resort.
Careful Covid protocols mean there is no rental of direct body wear (including gloves and goggles), rental clothing is disinfected with ultralight, boots are sanitised, gondola capacity is limited to two people per cart, gondola windows are kept open for ventilation and chair lift capacity is limited.
