Cathay is increasing its schedule to Southeast Asia
Cathay boss Ronald Lam has announced expansions to the airline’s regional flight services following a six-day visit to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, with flight boosts to Phnom Penh, Penang and Phu Quoc.
Chief executive officer Ronald Lam travelled to Southeast Asia earlier this month with Hong Kong’s chief executive, John Lee, with a view to underscoring the region’s significance to Cathay’s expanding network.
“Our visit to the three ASEAN countries attests to the immense potential we see in these dynamic regional markets,” said Lam.
A third runway is currently under construction at Hong Kong airport and Lam said he viewed its completion as unlocking “great opportunities for us to grow”.
“We will continue to strengthen our existing routes, and deepen our network and collaboration across ASEAN to seize these growth opportunities,” he said.
The Cathay Group includes airlines Cathay Pacific and HK Express and currently flies to 17 ASEAN destinations, with more than 360 flights a week.
This year Cathay celebrates 75 years since its first flight to Vietnam and this winter, HK Express will launch a brand new route to the Vietnamese holiday island of Phu Quoc. Cathay and HK Express currently fly to three Vietnamese cities, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Danang.
Flights operated by Cathay Pacific to Phnom Penh in Cambodia will be boosted from five per week to a daily service from October 27. This reflects a growing customer demand, the airline said.
And from November 21, HK Express will launch a new direct route between Hong Kong and Penang in Malaysia.
According to Cathay, travellers can look forward to “more exciting destinations being added to our network towards reaching 100 destinations as a Group by 2025.” Watch this space.
