Street food treats in Macao - Portuguese egg tarts are a must-try

If you’re exploring the city with your family, you’ll be gratified to learn that it’s super easy to grab great food on the go. Some of the best places for authentic street food are Senado Square, home to landmarks such as the Ruins of St Paul and St Dominic’s Church, and Taipa Village. Rua do Cunha in Taipa Village is a pedestrianised area, packed with tasty snack stalls.

Portuguese egg tart

Perhaps Macao’s most famous foodie treat, the Portuguese egg tart is an absolute must-try when visiting the city. The sweet, creamy custard encased in buttery pastry is inspired by Portugal's Pastéis de Nata. Macau’s version is slightly sweeter and served warm - if you can get your hands on one straight from the baker’s oven, it will make your day!

Minchi

Minchi is a beloved local dish made from stir-fried minced pork or beef, or sometimes a combination of both, with diced potatoes, onions and seasonings. It’s a great comfort food, served over rice and often topped with a fried egg. Sometimes vegetables like green beans are added and the dish can be customised to include chicken and prawn, or even served with vegetarian options.

Pork chop bun

The iconic pork chop bun is one of Macau’s most comforting street food bites. Consisting of a juicy fried pork chop served in a soft bread roll, it’s the perfect pit-stop if you’ve been busy exploring all day. The too-good-to-miss thick pork chop often comes served with a tangy sauce and is fried to golden perfection.

Bacalhau

Traditional Portuguese dried, salted cod is on restaurant menus all over town. The ingredient is used as a flavour profile in many local dishes, such as Pastéis de Bacalhau (salt cod fritters) and Bacalhau with Potatoes and Onions, as well as in salads and other baked and fried dishes.

Almond cookies

These crumbly biscuits are made with mung bean flour which is mixed with lard and to which crushed almonds are added. Pretty fluted or flower-shaped molds are often used to press them into shape, creating an attractive sweet treat and souvenir of your time in Macau. Almond cookies are available all over Macau, if you can, try them freshly baked from a local snack store.
