Gyu+ Bar by Miyoshi review - the restaurant is famed for its beef cuisine
Love wagyu? Gyu+ Bar by Miyoshi opened earlier this autumn boasting a meat-led menu rooted in the philosophy of Kyoto’s acclaimed Michelin-starred Niku no Takumi Miyoshi, famed for its beef cuisine. Gyu, which means ‘beef’, is the brainchild of the Kyoto restaurant’s founder and self-made chef, Tsutomu Ito, and explores wagyu through sashimi, consommé, sushi, shabu shabu and wood-fired preparations. Rather than prioritising excessive marbling, Ito selects cuts that balance the flavour of lean meat with high-quality fat, allowing guests to experience the meat without overwhelming richness.
The Causeway Bay space is tucked away on the fourth floor of Lee Garden One and vaunts clean, modern lines warmed by wood tones.

Gyu+ Bar by Miyoshi review - guests are welecomed with a sleek interior
We began with a 15-hour slow-simmered beef truffle broth poured into wine glasses, the rich, earthy aroma engulfing our olfactory senses before you even take your first sip and is the perfect palate awakener. From there, you can watch as the cooking action unfolds before you, every flick of the flame and slice of the knife a part of the drama.
We were treated to A5 wagyu sashimi, a thinly sliced ichibo (rump cap) that melted in the mouth. Next, the Kyoto-style wagyu sushi came as lightly seared minced beef tossed with seafood and finished with lychee wood-smoked caviar. We then enjoyed a refreshing, citrusy palate-cleansing pop of yuzu and tarragon oil before moving onto the shabu shabu (hot pot) course of melty A5 sirloin paired with smoky Kumamoto aubergine and a vibrant sesame ponzu sauce. Then came wood-fired wagyu tenderloin, fire-kissed and served sauce-free to let the meat shine alongside red wine salt, fresh wasabi, and savory fermented hishio paste.
We finished with a light and crunchy passion fruit and mango pavlova.
