The expanded Terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will begin operating in phases from September 23, according to an official announcement by the airport this week.

The first facility off the blocks is the indoor Coach Hall, which will offer 41 covered parking spaces for buses, coaches and limousines. Ticketing counters and boarding points for cross-border coaches and limousines, currently at Terminal 1 and Car Park 4, and tour bus boarding spaces in Car Park 1, will be relocated to the new Coach Hall at T2. The parking spaces at Car Park 1 will be released to ease increased car parking demands. The airport’s bus stops will remain in their current locations.

The second phase of the project, which will see T2 opening departure facilities including check-in counters, is scheduled to launch early in 2026.

Once fully operational, T2 will provide full passenger services for arrivals and departures. It previously only offered departure facilities. It's believed that Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express will be relocated to the second terminal in March next year. Terminal 2 will mainly host regional services and Cathay Pacific will remain based in Terminal 1.

The revamped terminal is part of HKIA’s US$18 billion expansion project which started in 2016 and included a third runway which became operational at the tail end of 2024.

Around one third of the retail outlets at the nearby new shopping and entertainment complex, 11 Skies, will open in the middle of 2026, in accordance with the developer's contractual obligations.
