Hong Kong Palace Museum presents 'Treasures of Global Jewellery'

The Hong Kong Palace Museum is teaming up with New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to present a brand new exhibition.

‘Treasures of Global Jewellery from The Metropolitan Museum of Art: The Body Transformed’ is the Met’s first major travelling exhibition of its huge jewellery collection. This is the first time works from the prestigious collection have been exhibited in Hong Kong. They will be displayed alongside works from HKPM’s Mengdiexuan collection, a collection featuring more than 1,000 ancient Chinese gold and silver artifacts, and a major loan from the Illuminata collection, a private collection featuring European and Chinese pieces.

The Met’s jewellery collection includes more than one-and-a-half million objects from around the world spanning 5,000 years of art. ‘Treasures of Global Jewellery’ will present 200 of the finest pieces, covering five continents and 4,000 years from the second millennium BC to the 21st century, and celebrating jewellery as a medium for artistic and cultural expression.

This new exhibition is part of HKPM’s wider fashion and textile exhibition series which has included special exhibitions ‘Cartier and Women’ in 2023 and ‘French Fashion Jewellery 1770-1910 from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs’ held in 2024.

Highlights from this new exhibition include a presentation of stunning necklaces, pins and brooches, headpieces including gold rings excavated from Egyptian tombs, and facial jewellery such as diamond Cartier lorgnettes and contemporary pieces by Alexander McQueen.

Hong Kong designer and artist Alan Chan has been invited to provide artistic direction to the exhibition’s graphic and spatial design and the exhibition will be complemented by a diverse learning programme, with guided tours, workshops and public tours.
