The topsy-turvy world of Museum of Illusions Hong Kong

A brand new museum opened in Hong Kong this autumn.

The Museum of Illusions Hong Kong officially launched this month at Peak Galleria, offering a “mind-bending” world for visitors to explore.

The destination is in fact the largest Museum of Illusions in Asia and brings together more than 50 interactive exhibits with sensory play, ‘edutainment’ and visual discovery in a fun and lively environment.

The museum aims to lead the mind away from reality, distorting perspective on size, balance and spatial awareness with perspective-shifting rooms, sensory experiments and collaborative challenges.

In the Ames Room, people appear to grow or shrink as they move from one corner to another, while the Vortex Tunnel creates the illusion of the stationary walkway moving beneath people’s feet.

Colour-changing lights in the RGB Room reveal different layers of artwork across the walls, while the Walk in Kaleidoscope surrounds visitors with flowing patterns and infinitely multiplied reflections.

The museum also debuts four experiences created exclusively for Hong Kong. ‘Following Eyes’ channels the 1960s glamour of the city with a stylish cheongsam-clad figure that trails visitors around the room. In Portals, visitors enter a ‘cyber-noir’ version of Hong Kong, where neon-lit, rain-slicked façades and shifting shadows mesh the city’s past and future. And ‘Building Illusion’ showcases a typical Hong Kong restaurant storefront where visitors can beat gravity to scale walls and cling to windows.

Museum of Illusions Hong Kong, 10.30am to 9.30pm daily, tickets from $148 for three to 12 year olds (under threes enter for free), Shop G03, 101–103 & 105, Peak Galleria, 118 Peak Road, The Peak, Hong Kong; tickets available online.
