Singapore woos tourists with new year's firework spectacular

Singapore is set to light up the sky this Christmas season with a new year's firework spectacular using artisanal Japanese fireworks never before seen in Southeast Asia.

After a two-year hiatus, the Asian city has released details of its annual new year's firework display. 'STAR ISLAND Singapore Countdown 2022-23' will be presented by main sponsor JCB over Marina Bay.

The performance will celebrate Singapore and promises a dazzling spectacle of 'ghost effect shell‘ colour-graduation fireworks in the nation’s colours of red and white, as well as ten bursts of award-winning hand-crafted artisanal Japanese firecrackers.

The 70-minute sound and light display is based on the Japanese ‘hanabi’ tradition of gathering to eat, drink and enjoy fireworks. It has been choreographed around a ‘Star Island’ storyline, with huge pyrotechnics, lights, music and stage entertainment.

“We’re determined to create the best countdown for Singaporeans and international tourists alike to usher in the New Year, and have been planning how to choreograph our ‘hanabi’ into a brand new, spectacular storyline in symphony with fireworks, immersive sound, dynamic laser displays and state performances,” said STAR ISLAND Singapore Countdown 2022-23's executive producer Kenji Kohashi.

Further entertainment will feature live DJ sets, family-friendly zones and plenty of eats in the food village. A free-entry ‘Prequel to Star Island’ will run at the MBS Event Plaza between December 25 and 30 where visitors can get a sneak peek of the show. The area will transform into a ticketed satellite venue for the main show on December 31.

Tickets for STAR ISLAND Singapore Countdown 2022-23 are available online from October 20 priced from S$88, with VIP and Premier tiers also available. All tickets permit entry to the seated gallery at The Float at Marina Bay and access to the food village.
