An exciting new hospitality and lifestyle destination has opened at Singapore’s historic Civic District. Carolynne Dear headed over for a tour

Singapore's Civic District at the junction of Hill Street and Stamford Road reopened this month as Stamford Place.

Formerly known as Stamford Court, the original commercial landmark has now been reimagined as a four-storey lifestyle hub.

The Civic District began life in the early 1800s as a space shaped by Sir Stamford Raffles. In the 1920s, Eu Court, one of Singapore’s very first apartment blocks, dominated the area. Built by Eu Tong Sen, it drew crowds for its impressive neoclassical design and hand-blown glass windows. Sadly, it was demolished in the 1990s to ease traffic congestion on Hill Street - it sat opposite the dramatic Capitol Kempinski Hotel, an ode to neoclassical and Venetian Renaissance architecture, and it was ultimately decided that of the two, Eu Court should give way. Stamford Court, with its distinctive clock tower, was built in the remaining space.

This month the destination officially reopened as Stamford Place, home to serviced-living destination, Apt., created in partnership with Frasers Hospitality, and several food and beverage outlets, including the popular Gelato Messina brand in partnership with Hong Kong’s Black Sheep dining group.

Apt. is an impressively designed space, filled with artworks around the theme of time (the - now reinstated - Stamford Place clock tower is something of a local landmark). It’s set across levels three and four of Stamford Place, with 66 apartments available for minimum six-night stays and takes its name from both the word ‘apartment’ and for being ‘apt’ for the way people live today.

Seven room types range from a 24 sqm studio with workspace and king bed, to the spacious 47 sqm Canning and Civic Suites with separate living areas, kitchenettes and in-room washers and dryers.  Clever touches include under-bed storage and the property has partnered with local brands for amenities and tea and coffee facilities.

Some studios open onto a shared vestibule with sink, fridge and microwave, creating a private shared space for families if adjacent studios are reserved together. All rooms have access to shared, app-controlled laundry facilities.

Each apartment features hybrid cooling, with ceiling fans designed to reduce reliance on air conditioning where possible. There are filtered drinking water taps, casting-enabled televisions, Bang & Olufsen portable speakers and Malin + Goetz bath amenities. Illy coffee machines are available in Deluxe and Urban rooms.

There’s a 24-hour gym with Technogym equipment, 24-hour reception and concierge services, airport transfer services and parking with EV charging. Guests also have access to The Great Room by Industrious co-working space located within the building, with private suites and meeting rooms.

If you’re looking for a more independent, longer stay option in Singapore, Apt. is a sophisticated and well-placed consideration.
