Popular toy retailer Pop Mart has taken the world by storm in recent years. Founded in 2010, Pop Mart has expanded into a major player in the toy industry due in no small part to the explosion of its global product, Labubu.

Labubu is a character and a brand; it was originally the name of a character in The Monsters toy series created by Hong Kong artist, Kasing Lung, but has now become a brand in its own right. The plastic faces attached to a plush body have become a global sensation, promoted by celebrity advocates such as Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian and others. 

Labubu has helped Pop Mart’s profits triple in the past year and the trend shows no signs of slowing; Pop Mart retailers are ‘popping up’ worldwide and stores are regularly sold out of Labubu products.

The fascination is due in part to Pop Mart’s ‘blind box’ sales technique. The blind boxers contain a mystery figure and customers do not know which design they have bought until they open the package. This of course drives repeat purchases from collectors looking for specific or limited-edition figures.
