Hong Kong will welcome New Year's Eve with a giant fireworks display stretching for more than a kilometre from North Point to West Kowloon Cultural District.
The 12-minute extravaganza over Victoria Harbour will span 1.3 kms as the city counts down to midnight. There are eight recommended viewing points on both sides of the harbour as the fireworks are launched from five barges and 16 pontoons. Vantage points include West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Avenue of Stars and Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade on Kowloon-side, and Central Waterfront, Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai Temporary Promenade and East Coast Park Precinct on Hong Kong Island.
The display will also feature rooftop pyrotechnics from three buildings on Hong Kong Island.
The ‘Symphony of Happiness’ display is choreographed by Liu Lin who headed up the fireworks projects at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. Spectators can enjoy highlights including ‘The Propitious Clouds’ as rainbow-coloured smoke is illuminated by silver fireworks and ‘Blooming Blossoms’ with five layers of coloured fireworks launched at different heights.Â
In addition to the fireworks, four series of ‘Shooting Stars’ will be launched every 15 minutes from three landmark buildings on Hong Kong Island from 11pm. A giant countdown clock will be displayed on the wall of Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre as the city countdown to midnight.
The firework display will be broadcast live on Hong Kong’s free television channels and HKTB’s website and social media channels.
