'Central Crossing' lifestyle hub and hotel to open in Hong Kong

Central Crossing Hong Kong

The new development will be located on Wellington Street

A new hotel is coming to Hong Kong as part of an exciting ‘lifestyle hub’ opening in the city's Central district.

Known as Central Crossing, the development is designed by Foster + Partners architects, transforming part of Wellington Street with a 28-storey office tower, hotel tower, retail complex, open green space and heritage preservation. The project is due for completion next year.

The development is located on Wellington Street between Graham and Cochrane Streets and between the historic attractions of Tai Kwun, PMQ and Central Market. The location is a stroll from the nearest MTR station as well as Central’s Airport Express station.

UK-based Foster + Partners has history in the territory, having previously designed the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters and Hong Kong International Airport.

Central Crossing will feature an office tower and a hotel tower, with landscaped space between the two buildings. The landscaped area will include a dramatic four-storey waterwall which will sit at the entrance to the hotel. Pedestrian routes will allow people to cross the site at multiple levels and access the surrounding streets. There will be a direct link with the Mid-levels escalator and the towers will be elevated from the ground to maximise the light and space available to the public.

The towers are divided into two halves, with a ‘high zone’ optimising views out and a ‘low zone’ with a textured gold-zone facade to provide privacy from adjacent buildings. Views will be directed down towards Victoria Harbour and up to Victoria Peak. After dark, the tower walls will be washed with light to create a visual spectacle on the city skyline.

Central Crossing will be the first ‘Grade A’ office development to be built in a heritage site among Urban Renewal Authority projects in Hong Kong. The project will embrace the local heritage, which includes historical structures that date back to the 1880s.

Lead architect on the project Michael Jones, a senior partner at Foster + Partners, said the company was delighted to reveal “this exciting new addition to Central Hong Kong.

“The development is a celebration of this internationally renowned area’s rich heritage and vibrant street life,” he said. “Our objective was to bring a new dimension to Central by reinstating historic links and re-establishing local connections, with a permeable public space at the heart of the site."

Jones has previously worked on projects including the Great Court at the British Museum and the award-winning Bloomberg Headquarters in London.

The Central Crossing project is led by Wing Tai Properties Limited and CSI Properties Limited.

“We’re very excited with our stunning brand new mixed-use development project in core Central,” said Mico Chung, chairman and executive director of CSI Properties. “It’s been two decades since we have last seen a new Grade A office, world class luxury hotel and premium retail complex in this prime business district. With its integrated street level public open spaces, Central Crossing will become the most exciting hub to do business as well as a focal point of lifestyle activities. It’s a unique offering that Central has been waiting for.”

The project is currently slated for completion in mid-2026.
