British band Coldplay is set to play Hong Kong next spring when it brings its hugely successful ‘Music of the Spheres' world tour to the city.
Coldplay has confirmed that it will play three concerts in Hong Kong at the city's new Kai Tak Sports Park venue.
The concerts are part of the Asia leg of the tour and will be held at the brand new stadium, which is slated to open in March next year. Coldplay are confirmed to play on April 9, 11 and 12. Other dates on the Asia leg include Abu Dhabi and Mumbai in January, with the group ending the tour in Seoul on April 16, 19 and 22.
The concerts mark an important milestone for the new Kai Tak facility and are one of several major international events to mark its opening year. The Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament is slated to be held at the stadium from March 28 to 30; the tournament’s former home of Hong Kong Stadium in Causeway Bay is set for redevelopment. And the government is also set to host eight events at the park as part of the National Games next November.
The US$3.8 billion sports park project includes a main 50,000-seat stadium, an indoor sports centre and a public sports ground. The stadium covers 28 hectares and is the largest sports infrastructure project in Hong Kong. It’s expected the main stadium will have eight floors with 28 concession stands and five bars.
Further facilities will include a Neighbourhood Park with courts for ball games, a cycling track, jogging trail and children’s playground. A Dining Cove featuring a variety of dining spaces will overlook Victoria Harbour and there will also be a retail area.
It was confirmed earlier this month that the park would open in March next year with main structures and facilities completed by the end of this year.
This is the first time Coldplay has played Hong Kong since 2009 when the band performed at AsiaWorld-Expo in Chek Lap Kok.
General ticket sales will open at 10am on October 10. Online ticketing platform Klook will launch concert packages including accommodation at nearby hotels from October 8.
