Disney is to open its first theme park in the Middle East - an artist's impression of the new park
Disney is coming to the Middle East with the announcement earlier this month that plans are afoot for a Disney Theme Park on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
This will be the world’s seventh Disney destination and the first time the brand has landed in the Middle East. The park will be developed and built by Abu Dhabi-based leisure and entertainment company Miral with Walt Disney Company’s ‘imagineers’ leading creative design and operational oversight.
Full details are yet to be revealed but the park will offer signature Disney entertainment that celebrates the heritage of Disney and Abu Dhabi, themed accommodation and dining and retail experiences.
The waterfront resort will be located on Yas Island, a leisure and entertainment space located 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and 50 minutes from Dubai. Yas Island is already host to Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros World, including the world’s first Warner Bros themed hotel, as well as the Etihad Arena and ten international hotels.
According to the official announcement, the Abu Dhabi Disney Theme Park Resort will be the most advanced and interactive of all seven Disney destinations.
“This groundbreaking resort destination represents a new frontier in theme park development,” explained Disney Experiences chairman, Josh D’Amaro. “Our resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio. The location is unique - anchored by a beautiful waterfront - which will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways.”
So far there is no news on when the park will open, although Disney opened its first official stores in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi's flagship airline, is set to restart direct flights with Hong Kong from November this year.
